One of the most fun ways to get fit is by playing football. It is, for good reason, the world’s most popular sport. Even if you aren’t naturally blessed with the skill set to make it as a pro, amateur football is one of the country’s favourite hobbies. And it doesn’t just have to be for kids, either. From Sunday League to Five A Side, there is no doubt that the nation loves having a kick about with their mates.
If you haven’t had any practice playing, before, there are a few essentials you’ll need to start a team of your own. These can apply whether you’re taking a competitive approach or playing just for fun. Take note of these, and your games and training will go off without a hitch.
Space
Let’s get the most obvious out of the way first, shall we? Above all, you’re going to need somewhere to play. While access to a proper pitch may be preferable, it’s not always possible. Provided you aren’t playing in a semi-professional capacity, any grass will do. Even if it’s just at your local park. Just make sure that you remember to wear the right studs to avoid injury. Different turf will require different boots.
You also have the option of artificial playing surfaces. You can find local training or Five A Side pitches near you online.
Kits
Well, you’re going to need some kind of uniform. A lot of teams, even at an amateur level, opt to have their own kits custom made. That includes shirts, shorts, and socks. You’ll also need a someway decent pair of football boots. If you can’t afford to buy full kits for your team, two sets of coloured bibs work just as well for differentiating teams.
Remember to pick up proper safety wear to avoid injury. You’ll need things like shinpads and ankle tap to keep safe when the tackles are flying in.
Accessories
These, for the most part, are optional. But your team, no matter its level, will function better and look the part with them. If you’re going to be doing any training exercises, it’s a good idea to stock up on cones. These can also come in handy for marking out a pitch area (and goals) if you aren’t playing on a proper pitch.
Other things to keep in mind are balls and cheap football trophies if you want to make things a little more competitive. If you can afford to, invest in some proper goalposts, so there’s no arguing over whether or not someone has actually scored!
Above all, you’ll need your friends. Playing football is a great way to get in shape, but equally it’s about having fun with your best buds. Remember to take precautions against dehydrated, don’t overexert yourself, and have fun. You’ll more than likely find yourself developing a serious competitive streak, but remember you’re there to have fun.
Remember that, if you’re running a team for kids, you’ll have to take steps towards safeguarding children. This is especially important if they are in otherwise vulnerable situations.
